Its overall score of 5.7 is precisely average among the recent products. Norman scored 5.3 points for cleanup overall, the second-lowest score of recent products.Īvast! Rescue Disc ($10/once direct, 3.5 stars) detected more rootkits than Norman did and scored 5.3 points for rootkit cleanup. Norman Malware Cleaner 2.1 (Free, 3.5 stars) detected more of the rootkit-based threats than Malwarebytes but scored just 2.4 points. Rootkit scores by other cleanup-only tools vary wildly. In an earlier review Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.46 (Free, 3.5 stars) showed a similar weakness against rootkits. After its cleanup finished, the rootkit technology in two of the samples remained active. It detected 57 percent of the samples that use rootkit technology and scored 3.6 points. The one area where the scanner didn't excel was rootkit removal. It's true that six other products detected 100 percent of those same scareware threats, but none of them achieved the perfect cleanup that Malwarebytes did. Malwarebytes aced the scareware removal sub-test, with 100 percent detection and a perfect 10.0 points. With 6.4 points it's substantially ahead of ZoneAlarm Antivirus + Firewall 2012 ($59.95 direct for three licenses, 3 stars), which took 6.0 points. However, it's so very effective at cleaning up what it does detect that it achieved the highest cleanup score of that same group. The scanner's detection rate of 79 percent is second-to-lowest among products tested with my current collection of threats.
